    Suffering

Suffering shakes us and brings us the opportunity to awaken to a deeper truth.  Most of the time when we suffer, we feel the need to change something in order to improve our lives.  We change our jobs, relationships, diet, personal habits, and on and on.  There are huge industries driven by this restless need that we experience to constantly improve our conditions and ourselves.  While these actions may provide temporary relief or improve the quality of life, the methods never seem to go deep enough to cut the root of our dissatisfaction.  This simply means that through all the methods of self-improvement we engage, as beneficial as they may seem, we have not fully met and become who we truly are.  (Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche.  Tibetan Sound Healing).

Wishing you peace and well being as you look long enough or thoroughly enough to connect with our innermost essence.

Martin Luther King Jr Day Remembered

Ultimately a great nation is a compassionate nation.  America has not met its obligations and its responsibilities to the poor.  One day we will have to stand before the God of history and we will talk in terms of things we've done.  Yes, we will be able to say we built gargantuan Bridges to span the seas, we built gigantic buildings to kiss the skies.  Yes, we made our submarines to penetrate oceanic depths.  We brought into being many other things with our scientific and technological power.

It seems that I can hear the God of history saying, "That was not enough! But I was hungry and ye feed me not.  I was naked and ye clothed me not.  I was devoid of a decent sanitary house to live in, and ye provided no shelter to me.  And consequently, you cannot enter the kingdom of greatness.  If ye do it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye do it unto me."  That's the question facing America today. (Martin Luther King Jr. Becoming Awake Through a Great Revolution.  April 9, 1968.)

Wishing you peace and well being as we face the question and do the right thing.

    Expectations

Many of us walk around with resentments, unaware that the real cause stems from our own expectations - expectations of ourselves, expectations of others, expectations of our jobs.  And all these expectations emanate from fear.  All our disappointments and all our resentments and anguish can be traced back to their source: fear of not getting what we want and losing what we have. (Nancy O'Hara.  work from the inside out: 7 steps to LOVING what you do.)

Wishing you peace and well being as you examine your expectations.

    Awake and See Your Life

"In the middle of the road of my life
I awoke in a dark wood
where the true way was wholly lost." (Dante)

In three brief lines Dante says that the journey begins right here.  In the middle of the road.  Right beneath your feet.  This is the place.  There is no other place and no other time.  Even if you are successful and follow the road you have set yourself, you can never leave here.  Despite everything you already have achieved, life refuses to grant you, and always will refuse to grant you, immunity from its difficulties.

"One day, in the middle of everything, we awake and see our life as we have made it."  (David Whyte. The Heart Aroused)

Wishing you peace and well being as you awake and see your life in 2007.
